Bleu Table Events

I think charcuterie boards are gorgeous. Anyone who can make those has a talent that I personally lack. I could make one, but it would definitely not be pretty. I'm pretty sure it would taste good though, at least to me. I love looking at pictures of them on Instagram, and that's how I discovered Bleu Table Events

As much as I would love to say I purchased a charcuterie board from them (one day!), this is a tale of when I purchased something that kiddo would enjoy too. As an Easter gift to her (both of us really) I purchased a S'mores box that was themed for Easter. I love s'mores and this kit came with everything you could possibly need! It came with a little fire box, the graham crackers, big marshmallows, little marshmallows, Peeps, Hershey bars in regular and dark chocolate, Hershey kisses and even my favorite candy of all time (which was the reason I pulled the trigger on purchasing) mini Cadbury eggs.

The ordering and pick up process were both super easy. The box was so cute! And I almost didn't want to open it, but those Cadbury eggs were calling my name.

After kiddo opened her box on Easter, we tried to find the perfect spot to have our s'more date. We started at the park closest to our house, but they had the picnic tables blocked off where we couldn't get to them. We ended up at LSU by the lakes, which is our default picnic spot and I kept my fingers crossed that the wind would let us light our fire. 😂

The wind cooperated with us and we had the best time with our little s'more box! We started with traditional s'more, but then got a little adventurous and started using the peeps and the Cadbury eggs as our chocolate. It may not have stayed on as well as we would have liked, but they all tasted delicious!

I think next time we do a picnic, we'll try one of their charcuterie boards. What are your thoughts on charcuterie boards? Are you a fan or no? I've noticed these types of businesses are popping up like crazy, and I am here for it! I'm not extroverted enough to buy them to entertain people, but I am hungry enough to buy them to enjoy for myself! 😀

In The Kitchen - Empanadas

Hey y'all! Welcome to this installment of In The Kitchen, where I tell you about my attempts at trying to cook for myself. I've progressed a good bit in this area since I was jokingly referred to as Betty Crocker by my friends in college after burning a Poptart in our dorm room and stealthily throwing it away in the trash can as far as possible from my room to throw off any suspicion, but I'm still not going to voluntarily cook for too many people.

However, as I mentioned last time, this pandemic has brought out a love for cooking classes via Zoom. Yelp has been offering some awesome virtual events, and when they had one for empanadas, one of my favorite foods, I knew I had to sign up.

The class was taught by a chef out of Baltimore, and we were sent a list of ingredients and a recipe to follow along with. The recipe she sent was for black bean and corn empanadas, which I would love, by Momma Hungry would hate. (Momma Hungry HATES beans.) So, I decided that I would just improvise. I would make beef and cheese empanadas instead.

But then I hit up the google machine and got some brilliant ideas - why not make a VARIETY OF EMPANADAS?! So I settled on beef and cheese, all cheese, and Nutella empanadas. A full meal in tiny little empanada discs.

I was extremely grateful that we were not making the dough from scratch, but finding empanada discs was a challenge! I went to Winn-Dixie because I knew I had seen them there before. I confidently stroll up to where the Goya frozen products are and had a minor panic attack. The shelf where they should be was empty. After trying to make them appear with my mind (which didn't work), I tried to think of other stores I had seen them because I did not want to spend all day driving store to store for them. In a last ditch effort, I started moving items around and happened to find 2 packages, exactly the amount I needed. Maybe I did make them appear with my mind after all? 😲

Once I got home, I started cooking. I got my oil heated and ready to fry and then went to figuring out which ones to make first. I went with the beef and cheese ones. I browned and drained my ground beef, then started building the empanada. I wanted to make sure these didn't come apart in the frying process (like my fried pizzas did when I made those) so I read that you were only supposed to put 1 tablespoon of filling into each disc. It was hard to follow that rule, but I did. While it doesn't seem like it would be enough filling, it really is. Aside from one of them having a nose on it, I think the first batch turned out pretty well.

See the nose on that one in the upper right?

Next up, was my batch of all cheese. One thing I learned, is that for all cheese ones, you can definitely put more than one tablespoon of cheese in these. Since the cheese melts, it almost seems as if nothing is in it once you cook it. This is one I need to try again to perfect before I attempt to serve them to people that don't live with me. Aside from that, these turned out ok. They looked like they were supposed to and I was feeling pretty confident in my empanada making skills and mentally debating if it was worth cleaning my house to invite people over to cook these for them.

Cheese only

At this point, I am super confident and starting working on my dessert empanadas - Nutella filled. I filled the first two and put them in to fry and while I was working on the next two, I forgot one very important thing about my oven. Keep something going on the stovetop too long without turning the fan on and the smoke alarm goes off. And sure enough, it starts going off.

Just so you know, the smoke alarm goes off so much that kiddo doesn't even come down stairs when it happens anymore.

But back to the story ... so while I'm turning on the vent, opening and shutting the front door and having Papa Hungry wave a towel in front of the smoke alarm, I remember that 2 of my 4 dessert empanadas are in the oil. I couldn't save them, they came out burnt. And while they tasted burnt, you could tell that had they not been burnt, they would have tasted pretty good. And that was my ego getting shot down for thinking I should cook empanadas for other people.

Can you spot the burnt ones? 😂

This meal was mostly a success. Most of the empanadas turned out almost like they were supposed to. I felt better when someone, who forgot to mute themselves on the cooking class, also had their smoke alarm start going off in the middle of class. And I'm getting more comfortable using my fryer, and also more comfortable at filming myself attempting these recipes for my Instagram stories. So thank you to Yelp Baltimore for putting on a class that was easy to follow with not too many steps so someone who is not totally comfortable in the kitchen could still follow along and have fun.

Is this content that you enjoy seeing? Should I post more of my attempts to cook for y'all? Let me know!

Food Truck Love - Chicky Sandos

As promised, the second installment in my local food truck love goes to Chicky Sandos. When I lived in Nashville, all everyone talked about was hot chicken. The hotter the hot chicken, the better. To hear people brag about how they couldn't taste for the rest of the day or how much milk they had to drink after, made it seem like not a fun dining experience to me. Once people found out I was from Louisiana, they felt like I would love it, and wanted me to instantly go for the hottest level of hot chicken.

Your girl never got the hottest level because she wants to actually enjoy the food she is eating. But I do enjoy a little kick to my chicken and once I discovered Chicky Sandos, I knew I had to try it. However, being on the side of town they are based at hardly ever happens for me. But Andy's Frozen Custard, who just opened not too far from me, brought them in one Tuesday and I was hooked. The next Tuesday? I had to get the whole family in on it.

There are 3 things on the menu, so it's pretty straight forward and simple. (1) The Sando, which is their chicken sandwich; (2) Hot Box Combo, which is two jumbo chicken strips and fries; and (3) Chicky Fries, seasoned waffle fries topped with cheese, chicken bits and Sando sauce. The Chicky Fries are my personal favorite.

Chicky Fries - Medium Heat

For all of the options you can vary the spice level: Naked, Mild, Medium, Hot, and Reaper. I go with the medium heat because I find that it's not overly dominant on the spice level but still gives you a nice little kick at the end. Plus, it isn't too hot for kiddo if she happens to snatch some of mine.

Have you tried them out yet? If so, what's your go-to order?

Food Truck Love - Tre's Street Kitchen

I am a stan of food trucks. I'm amazed at the food that can be made inside a truck. I'm blown away at how the people who cook in them can be so happy all the time because that has got to be super hot and not easy. And I love that this truck can travel to different locations, and frankly I need more to travel closer to me.

The only downside of most of the food trucks here is their distance from my home, as sometimes the food is not as easy for me to eat in my car in the parking lot where the truck is. By the time I get home, the food is still tasty but I know that I've lost some of the magic in my 20+ minute drive back to my house. And if there are fries involved, my air fryer gets a workout to help bring them back to life.

This week, I want to share 2 of my current favorite food trucks you can find here in Baton Rouge. First up, Tre's Street Kitchen

Find them at 12333 Jefferson Highway

Just look at their Instagram and you'll see why you need to check this truck out...it will probably be because of the crawfish nachos and heads up, that's not an every day item so have a back up plan! That was my experience. I finally made my way across town with crawfish nachos on my mind and in my heart. When I arrived, they were very much not on the menu that day and I tried not to look too heartbroken and hungry.

Recommended to me in their place was the Street Burger, their best seller. Who am I to question the people? I took it with everything - the bacon, the friend jalapenos, the fried egg, the cheese, the chipotle mayo, the Street sauce, and the normal boring burger toppings (lettuce, tomato and onion...but I took the onion off)

The Street Burger

First impression, "dang this bag is heavy." Second impression after getting in the car and opening the box, "OH! I get fries too!" Third impression, "That's a bigger burger than I thought." Fourth impression, "There's no way I can eat this in my car." So off to the house it was. Let me add here that I hit every red light between Tre's Street Kitchen and my house. The universe did not want me to savor this burger right away. But when I got home, it was game on.

Main impression: This could easily be the best burger that I've eaten. I would definitely place it in the top 5 burgers I've had in my life. Everything was cooked perfectly. The jalapenos were crisp, the egg wasn't overly runny, the bacon was crisp, the Street sauce is something I want a couple of bottles of around my house. It was so good that I purposely didn't eat many fries just so I could finish this burger.

If you haven't been here, go get the Street Burger and let me know what you think. If you go and see that they are serving crawfish nachos, give me a call so I can drop everything to go get some. If you've been, what are some of your favorite items on their menu?

I'll be back later this week with a report on another of my favorite food trucks in the city, Chicky Sandos. Do you like food trucks? If so, what are some local ones that you love?

Mecie's Sweet Treats

Instagram is not a friend to my bank account. One day, while I was innocently scrolling, I came across some photos where someone had tagged Mecie's Sweets and these photos were gorgeous. I knew that I had to find her and order from her. However, at the time, my bank account said the budget for fun treats was zapped. I clicked the "follow" button to be teased until my budget was full again.

As luck would have it, she was going to be at The Market at the Oasis! If you haven't been, go check it out. Lots of cool vendors to spend all of your fun money with! I got there early because I had to take kiddo to musical theatre, but it was worth it since sometimes she tends to sell out.

My plan was to have some self control and not buy one of everything she had that day. The lineup for the day: triple berry cupcakes, pecan candy, lemon pound cake, turtle brownies, and monster cookies.

My ordering started with the monster cookies. One for me and one for kiddo (perfect), festively decorated with the spring colored M&Ms, and large enough that you probably should make each cookie two servings. Not so shocking, we each at our cookie in one sitting.

Next up was the pecan candy for Momma Hungry. I'm not an overly big pecan fan, but Momma Hungry ate this up pretty quickly, so I'm going to say that it must have been delicious.

I couldn't leave Papa Hungry out, so I got a 4 pack of the triple berry cupcakes so he could have one and then we could all try them too. 😀

And then it was breakfast time and I was getting a little hungry, and she happened to mention she had made this lemon pound cake that morning and I figured it was meant to be my breakfast. It didn't last out of the parking lot.

I resisted the turtle brownie, but I thought about it all the way to bringing kiddo to musical theatre. I said that I wouldn't regret leaving without it, and I regretted it for an entire week. So the next week, when she was back AND had turtle brownies, I had to go back.

Aside from having some amazing homemade treats, you'll be greeted by one of the most pleasant people you could ever encounter. If you haven't checked her out yet, click here to follow her on Instagram to know when she'll be at a pop up shop, or just go ahead and place an order. Trust me, it'll be worth it! And order me something while you're at it. 😉

Coffee & Cupcakes: First Quarter Round Up - Bakery Edition

And now, the moment you've all been waiting for *drumroll* the baked goods that I've been eating!

Joe's Bakery - We've had a variety of treats from these home bakers and we LOVE these Jason's Sure Fire Way To Your Heart cupcakes (and we love how every item is named for the person who likes them so much!)

Batch Baking Company - Got this little king cake for Mardi Gras and it was delicious and the perfect size for one person to enjoy for a few days.

Noble By The Pound - Couldn't decide what to display, so here's kiddo with a Noble Dessert Sampler. The pound cakes are delicious, but don't sleep on the chocolate chip cookies, or the brownie cupcakes (my personal favorite).

Seaux Banana Pudding - It's almost summer, which means you need this banana pudding in your life. You don't know it yet, but you need the strawberry pudding too. Just trust me.

Rue Beignet - Could have gone under coffee, but I only got a picture of my beignets from there.

Firth Cookies - You can't go wrong with anything you order from Firth Cookies. I've had all of the cookies (except for the cookies of the month, which I need to get the April cookie of the month because it sounds amazing!), I've had a cookie cake, and I've ordered one of the Easter baskets for kiddo for Easter. I've even stalked her cookies to Hive Pizza just to realize I need to live closer to get S'mores cookies more often. And I have to go back to get the cookie of the month. Because I have a problem. And I feel like we would be foodie friends 😂

Cupcake Junkie - Y'all, I also need to live closer to Coursey to eat more of these cupcakes. Since the flavors rotate daily, I've got to plan my life around the ones I want to try. I started with these: Strawberry Bliss (which was my breakfast dessert), followed by Wedding Cake for my dinner, and then half of Party Time and Denial for dessert (with the other halves coming to work the next day)

Coffee & Cupcakes: First Quarter Round Up - Coffee Edition

This post is long overdue, but while the Hungry Fam goes on vacation, I wanted to give you a quick recap on the coffee shops and bakers that I've enjoyed during Q1 of 2021. First up, the coffee edition:

Cedar House Roasting Co.  - super cool vibe and located farther from my house than I would like it to be

Social Coffee - currently located inside Chow Yum Phat and can be found on Saturdays at Market at the Oasis, but soon to have their own location!!

Highland Coffees - One of the few coffee shops I've found to be open late! Cute courtyard that makes you feel like you aren't in the middle of campus hustle and bustle.

Magpie Cafe - one of my favorite spots that I've discovered on someone's recommendation! They have an awesome assortment of pastries to fit all dietary needs. Even I ate a vegan chocolate chip cookie...and liked it.

Lighthouse Coffee - One of my favorite places in Baton Rouge. Great mission, great coffee, and this cereal latte is highly addictive.

Brew Ha-Ha - One of the cutest places with the best name! Lots of cool artwork and amazing cake balls for you to enjoy with your coffee.

Coffee Bean Cafe - cute place with one of the most unique drinks I've had yet - the bananas foster latte.

Coffee Joy - Great coffee, friendly staff, good pastries. I need a second visit since I was a little rushed the first trip.

Reve Coffee Lab - Back from their hiatus from Baton Rouge in the perfect spot for them! Part coffee shop, part bar, with a great selection of pastries and some "real" food.

La Divina Italian Cafe - Fabulous coffee, amazing gelato, cookies the size of your head

Cupcake (Bakery) Round-Up headed your way on Wednesday! Lots of good home bakers for you to try to catch at the pop-ups around town!

Mestizo's

One of the best things I've done is to sign up for the 225 Best Eats email list. If you are a 225 local that loves food and loves saving money on food, then you need to sign up now. I get in a restaurant rut and get scared to try new to me places because I'm never sure (1) if I will like the food and (2) if I will like the food for the price I have to pay for it. These emails help me branch out of my dining comfort zone and let me try places for a fraction of the cost.

Back in February, 225 Best Eats ran a special for $22.50 for $40 worth of food and you could pick from 8 local restaurants. Kiddo picked Mestizo's, and when we tried it, it was love at first bite of their queso. We knew that the entire Hungry Fam needed a trip to Mestizo's and Papa and Momma Hungry fell in love!

It started with the queso, which is probably my favorite queso in the city of Baton Rouge. (Foreshadowing to next year's Eat All The Things perhaps?) And at our servers recommendation, the chicharrones.

You're looking at one of the best food pairings in the city. Who needs chips when you pretty much have the Mexican version of pork skins to dip in your queso? Nobody. Our waitress told us that she'll add meat to the queso and eat this as a meal. 😲 BRILLIANT IDEA! So that might be next trip's meal, but as for this meal, we got some real food too.

Crawfish Tacos

You'll find these crawfish tacos on the tapas menu and they are my favorite thing to get here. Every bite of your tacos at Mestizo's is full of the good stuff. While these are pretty simple, just crawfish, cheese, lettuce and tomato, you get all of the flavor in every bite.

Beef Relleno

Also off the tapas menu, Momma Hungry got the beef relleno. That pepper was huge and stuffed with cheese and beef. According to Momma Hungry it was extremely rich and she wasn't even able to finish it.

Pork Tamales

A throwback from our last trip (that I didn't post about) but I HAVE to tell you about are the pork tamales, which are also found on the tapas menu. (See the theme? I love the tapas menu!) These are 3 good sized tamales packed with pork. So good!

Del Mar Tacos

Kiddo ordered off the not tapas menu, and got the Del Mar Tacos. One grilled shrimp taco, one fried shrimp taco, and one fried crawfish taco all topped with avocado, slaw, cheese and served with a side of tomatillo sauce. They looked delicious and are also a contender for my meal on the next trip.

Steak Quesadilla

Papa Hungry got the steak quesadilla and has been raving about how well the steak was cooked to anyone who will listen. He and Momma Hungry are debating on steak fajitas for the next trip.

I'm embarrassed to say that this is my second time living in Baton Rouge and I've only been here twice! Mestizo's has been here over 20 years. While it may not look like much on the outside, to be honest, I didn't even know it was still open, the inside offers a nice vibe. It's not fancy, but can feel fancy and the food makes it seem fancy.

Do you get the 225 Best Eats deals? (If not, you should!) If you've been to Mestizo's, what is your go to item to order? Most importantly, who do you think has the best queso in the Baton Rouge area?
