Mestizo's

One of the best things I've done is to sign up for the 225 Best Eats email list. If you are a 225 local that loves food and loves saving money on food, then you need to sign up now. I get in a restaurant rut and get scared to try new to me places because I'm never sure (1) if I will like the food and (2) if I will like the food for the price I have to pay for it. These emails help me branch out of my dining comfort zone and let me try places for a fraction of the cost.

Back in February, 225 Best Eats ran a special for $22.50 for $40 worth of food and you could pick from 8 local restaurants. Kiddo picked Mestizo's, and when we tried it, it was love at first bite of their queso. We knew that the entire Hungry Fam needed a trip to Mestizo's and Papa and Momma Hungry fell in love!

It started with the queso, which is probably my favorite queso in the city of Baton Rouge. (Foreshadowing to next year's Eat All The Things perhaps?) And at our servers recommendation, the chicharrones.

You're looking at one of the best food pairings in the city. Who needs chips when you pretty much have the Mexican version of pork skins to dip in your queso? Nobody. Our waitress told us that she'll add meat to the queso and eat this as a meal. 😲 BRILLIANT IDEA! So that might be next trip's meal, but as for this meal, we got some real food too.

Crawfish Tacos

You'll find these crawfish tacos on the tapas menu and they are my favorite thing to get here. Every bite of your tacos at Mestizo's is full of the good stuff. While these are pretty simple, just crawfish, cheese, lettuce and tomato, you get all of the flavor in every bite.

Beef Relleno

Also off the tapas menu, Momma Hungry got the beef relleno. That pepper was huge and stuffed with cheese and beef. According to Momma Hungry it was extremely rich and she wasn't even able to finish it.

Pork Tamales

A throwback from our last trip (that I didn't post about) but I HAVE to tell you about are the pork tamales, which are also found on the tapas menu. (See the theme? I love the tapas menu!) These are 3 good sized tamales packed with pork. So good!

Del Mar Tacos

Kiddo ordered off the not tapas menu, and got the Del Mar Tacos. One grilled shrimp taco, one fried shrimp taco, and one fried crawfish taco all topped with avocado, slaw, cheese and served with a side of tomatillo sauce. They looked delicious and are also a contender for my meal on the next trip.

Steak Quesadilla

Papa Hungry got the steak quesadilla and has been raving about how well the steak was cooked to anyone who will listen. He and Momma Hungry are debating on steak fajitas for the next trip.

I'm embarrassed to say that this is my second time living in Baton Rouge and I've only been here twice! Mestizo's has been here over 20 years. While it may not look like much on the outside, to be honest, I didn't even know it was still open, the inside offers a nice vibe. It's not fancy, but can feel fancy and the food makes it seem fancy.

Do you get the 225 Best Eats deals? (If not, you should!) If you've been to Mestizo's, what is your go to item to order? Most importantly, who do you think has the best queso in the Baton Rouge area?
