When SoLou opened, and it was almost like you needed a reservation to go, I decided to try it out with friends. Until none of my friends could go, and I found myself making a reservation for one at a high top.
When I arrived, no high tops were available, so I ended up getting seated at a table for 4. At least I had more space to order ample amounts of food. I had scoped out the menu prior to going, so I knew the plan was to get a heartier appetizer, then go with a soup/salad combo, followed by a dessert to be picked at random.
What I didn't expect was these delicious little friend bundles of joy being brought to my table to start! An unexpected perfect addition to the appetizer that I planned to order, the crab dip. Now the crab dip came with toast, but the pork skins were also a completely acceptable vehicle to get the crab dip from the pan to my mouth.
I followed these lovely appetizers up with a small salad and a cup of soup. The crab dip was extremely rich, and was essentially a meal in itself, so I felt this the best main course option to save room for dessert.
I went with a Caesar salad and the crab and corn bisque. I only eat Caesar salads at restaurants. They just taste 100 times better. I'm a sucker for anything seafood and corn bisque, and I swear this could be the best I've ever had. I left wishing I had ordered a bowl instead of a cup because I had to remind myself it isn't polite to pick the cup up and drink the last drops. Pus that little piece of cornbread in there was a nice touch.
Selecting a dessert was the hardest part of my dining experience. I debated between the table top s'mores and the strawberry milk and cookies. The strawberry milk and cookies won out, and I was disappointed in my choice.
I'm sure to some people strawberry milk is delicious. I am not one of them. I didn't enjoy the taste, and the cookies weren't anything super special. BUT...
What I didn't realize, was that they bring you cotton candy at the end of the meal! It was a nice surprise, and definitely kept me from leaving on a slightly disappointing dessert choice note.
On top of how good the food was, the service was exceptional. Everyone I interacted with was very polite and friendly, which sometimes doesn't happen at nicer restaurants when you are a solo diner. I never felt like they were trying to rush me out to bring in a larger group, and I can't wait to go back with either kiddo (who I will have to fight with for the cotton candy) or a group of friends.
Have you been to SoLou yet? If so, what did you get and should I consider getting that next?
